Back after a break

A long one, actually....

Not sure if the next break is going to be around the corner, as well....

Annals of popularity

I would be a very rich man, if I could make stuff like this up : 'Bush shoe': New orders for 300,000 pairs!

What does it say of the popularity of the President of the single superpower in this planet, that the shoes thrown at him, are ordered in the hundreds of thousands ?

On second thoughts, don't tell me.

Cricketing Controversy looming ?

This was always lurking in the background, ready to pop out. Now, Peter Roebuck goes there.

Is there a there, there ? I think there is....
Roebuck talks of an article in India Today (Can't find an online link to the original story), about the link between Dawood Ibrahim and Javed Miandad, the Director-General of the PCB.

Among other things, the two are related by marriage of their children (Miandad's son is married to one of Dawood's daughters). Naughtily, Roebuck also throws in some mud about match-fixing, but, let's leave that lie for now.

Can the Indian Cricket Team and the Indian Government afford to ignore this connection ? Going through with India's tour to Pakistan will throw up some really tricky questions.

We will see soon enough - about the tour. The connections and assorted details are another matter...

Thought for the day

From Rules for Radicals, by Saul Alinsky, one of the foremost pioneers of community organizing :
"There's another reason for working inside the system. Dostoevski said that taking a new step is what people fear most. Any revolutionary change must be preceded by a passive, affirmative, non-challenging attitude toward change among the mass of our people. They must feel so frustrated, so defeated, so lost, so futureless in the prevailing system that they are willing to let go of the past and change the future. This acceptance is the reformation essential to any revolution.

Nuggets for the day

David Plouffe, the campaign manager for Barack Obama's election, in an extensive interview about the elections and more. Read in full.

Second, in an "off-the-record" discussion on politics with other campaign managers (friend and foe), which, of course, has been documented by Ambinder, here.

Did you say chutzpah ? Via Hilzoy, this gem at the end of a post on the failed auto industry bailout :
Here's my favorite quote from the whole mess:

""We simply cannot ask the American taxpayer to subsidize failure," said Sen. McConnell."

Whyever not? We pay his salary, don't we?

I am sure this more than applies to our political lot, don't you say ?

Metro Dreams

James Fallows has a good piece on the growth of the Beijing Metro, has a few words of appreciation for a city that has been much maligned.

Makes me wonder : What will Namma Metro look like ? Will it continue to intelligently evolve like the Beijing Metro (and many other metros) ? Or, will Namma Metro also go the way of Namma Politicians - careless, feckless, irresponsible etc...?
